DEER & DEER HUN TING IS A REGISTERED
TRADEMARK OF F+ W PUBLICATIONS, INC.
I find it a great pleasure and honor to announce the addi- tion of three highly respected whitetail minds to our already deep staff of field editors.
Their names might not surprise you, because all three men have been contributing comprehensive and practical feature articles to this magazine for several years.
Leading off is Dr. Phillip Bishop of Alabama. You might know him as the
D&DH writer who can easily explain how a deer’s lungs work; why deer blood is nearly a chemical mystery; and why deer vision is a lot more complicated than we previ- Dr. Phillip Bishop ously thought.
What you might not know is that Bishop is a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Alabama and previously served as a visiting scientist for NASA at Johnson Space Center, Houston. He has also been a consultant to the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and numerous private companies, and has traveled a large part of the world as a missionary and scientist.
When he is not teaching or traveling, Dr. Bishop enjoys spending time in the deer woods of Alabama and Georgia. He is an avid three-season whitetail hunter and especially enjoys bow-hunting.
Also joining our list of field editors is Matt Harper, a frequent contributor on anything and everything related to private-land deer management and whitetail nutrition. Matt Harper Harper is a graduate of Iowa State University, where he received a degree in Animal Science with a special focus and advanced study in ruminant nutrition. While at Iowa State, he also conducted research
on forage utilization by ruminants and conducted specific studies in whitetail deer genetics.
Professionally, Harper has worked in the deer nutrition industry in several facets, including nutrition and property consulting, deer research, feed program development and formulation and food-plot product development.
Our third new contributing editor is master bow-hunter and veteran outdoor writer Les Davenport.
A lifetime Illinois resident, Davenport harvested his first whitetail in 1962 at age 15. His outdoor writing career paralleled a 30-year employment in the planning department of Caterpillar Inc. Les and his wife Connie retired in 1999 to their farm in western Illinois. They presently co-lease 1,000 acres managed for trophy whitetails. He was also a deer hunting guide for many Les Davenport years.
Although Daven-
port has hunted big game on five continents, his utmost passion is bow-hunting mature white-tailed bucks.
“There is no more elusive big-game animal in the world,” he said. “Outsmarting adult Cornbelt bucks is more about persistence and timing than anything.”
His best advice for young hunters? “Respect other sportsmen, enjoy the hunt more than the killing, and choose your whitetail heroes carefully.”
Leaving the fold after this issue will be longtime field editor Walt Larsen of Minnesota, author of the “Candid Whitetails” column. We owe many thanks to Walt for his years of insightful and entertaining columns.
